5 Critical Factors to Consider When Shipping Bulk Liquids

Bulk liquid shipping typically fails long before the transport ever hits the road. The wrong equipment selection, the improper or missing documents, the inappropriate container liner – these decisions made long before the truck ever backs into the loading dock are the incidents that are expensive to explain. It’s easy to avoid getting into that situation. Just follow these five guidelines:

Container selection sets the ceiling for everything else

The type of container you opt for is more than just a packaging decision – it will dictate your regulatory path, your equipment needs, and whether liquid will arrive contaminated.

IBC totes are great for small-to-mid volume shipments in which flexibility is important. They are modular, stackable, and fairly easy to obtain. The downside is that they pose more contamination risk shipment-to-shipment unless you are using single-use liners, and are also not a fit for large-volume moves without substantial coordination overhead.

Flexitanks are single-use bladders that fit inside a standard 20-foot shipping container. For non-hazmat liquids (edible oils, non-regulated industrial fluids) they are one of the most cost-effective options, especially for ocean freight. They are not suitable for hazardous materials, and are a one-way solution, so waste disposal is factored into the cost.

ISO tank containers are the standard for large-volume and hazmat liquid moves. Stainless steel, code-rated, reusable, and built to survive ocean and overland transit. They have a higher per-move cost, but for dangerous goods, there simply is not a compliant alternative in many cases.

The decision comes down to three factors: volume, hazard class, and food-grade. Food-grade oil doesn’t go in a flexitank that once contained an industrial solvent, even if cleaned. Get the container decision right before anything else.

Chemical compatibility can’t be assumed

This is the point where ordinary shipments become accidents. An inappropriate liner, gasket, or valve seal for your specific liquid doesn’t give way catastrophically – it degrades slowly, and you realize you have a contaminated load, a spill, or a damaged container that went undetected because it was leaking within an ISO corner post.

Truth is, a liner is just a piece of plastic. There are no independent certifications for compatibility because there’s no way to test every possible chemical under every possible condition, and passing a laboratory test with one type of fluid is no guarantee that it won’t react with one of your products. Compatibility has to be confirmed in your real-world conditions against your specific liquid with your chosen material at your required wall thickness. And against your other products, because even the most innocuous-seeming liquids can interact with residues in ways that compromise the next load.

Rather than trying to self-verify liner materials against chemical databases, most shippers are better served working with bulk liquid transport companies that treat container-liner compatibility as part of their standard vetting process. They’ve already mapped common problem combinations and know what questions to ask before accepting your booking.

Regulatory compliance is not optional

Over 1.6 billion tons of hazardous materials are transported in the United States each year (Bureau of Transportation Statistics), and a good portion of that is hauled as bulk liquid. If your liquid falls under dangerous goods classifications, the paperwork and placarding are not just bureaucratic formalities – they’re what stands between your load and the rejection bin at the dock or the weigh station.

Your liquid’s safety data sheet tells you everything. The hazard class, the packing group (if any), the emergency response details. And the shipping paperwork, container markings, placards, and carrier notification must all match that SDS exactly. The carrier can legally refuse the load if they don’t. One mismatch, and it doesn’t make a difference if it’s something harmless like the numbering on the placard.

The most common source of misclassifications is shippers trying to transfer a product that changed concentration or formulation without updating the SDS, or just assuming that their liquid “probably isn’t hazmat.” Don’t. Check the classification before you book.

Weight and density calculations come before volume

This is often the stumbling block for shippers accustomed to moving dry freight. Dry freight is easy to price because you are rarely ever at a weight limit before you’re at cubic capacity. With liquid freight, it’s the exact opposite.

One gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds, many other bulk liquids are even heavier than that. Do that conversion before you quote, before you book equipment – do that conversion early and often. If you convert your estimated gallons into pounds and you’re overweight, you’ll need to split the load across two, or reduce fill volume. Finding out when the driver is sitting in your loading dock is the biggest waste of everyone’s time and money and a surefire sign that nobody did their homework.

And remember for LTL moves, freight class is essential. Bulk liquids price on density, and getting that classification wrong means massive billing adjustments after the fact. Make sure you do your homework and don’t leave anything to chance.

Viscosity and temperature requirements change the handling plan

Transporting a liquid that flows easily at room temperature and a liquid that must be heated to 150°F before it will pump are two different things, even if they’re both considered “bulk liquid.”

High-viscosity products – heavy syrups, certain industrial fluids, some food-grade oils – may require heat to stay pourable. Some will be thick enough to set up like concrete at room temperature. So, to treat them both the same means you’ve got part of your shipment on the floor, and the other part stuck in a hot tank.

This can be as simple as arranging to have the product mechanically agitated while it’s being unloaded, a service provided by most tank washers. You can’t assume that’s the solution, though. Some products simply won’t pump above a certain viscosity, no matter how much they’re sloshed around.

If the product requires heat, there’s more to it than running heating lines alongside the tank. Many carriers rely on running a portion of the product through a heat exchanger to return to the tank from the pump and motor – this provides enough heat to unload in most cases, but it’s hardly foolproof. For thicker products or particularly cold weather, they may simply not have brought along sufficient equipment to keep the product warm. This won’t reveal itself until the driver fails to unload your freight and you’re paying demurrage while he tries to find a more suitable pump.

Bulk liquid shipping isn’t harder than dry freight – it’s just less forgiving of assumptions. Work through these five factors before the truck rolls, and most of the ways a liquid shipment goes wrong simply won’t apply to you.
