Australia made about 75.8 million tonnes of waste in 2020 to 21. Much of it came from building and knock down jobs. A skip bin is the easiest way to deal with your own share. Start with reliable skip bin hire adelaide services. Good ones quote one final price, name the size in cubic metres, and list banned items. Three checks save the most money: weight limits, permit rules and tip fees. Miss them and the bill grows fast. Prices vary a lot between suppliers, so a quick phone call pays off. Get them right and the job runs itself.
Pick the size that fits the job
Most people hire a bin that is too small. I think that is the biggest mistake in the whole business. Bins are sold in cubic metres. One cubic metre is 1,000 litres. A normal wheelie bin holds 240 litres, so a 6 cubic metre skip takes about 25 of them. Clearing a garage? Guess high. A second delivery usually costs more than a bigger first bin.
Ask these before you pay
- Is the price final? Delivery, pick up and tip fees should all be in it.
- What is the weight limit? Extra tonnes get billed on top.
- How many days do I get? Extra days can cost extra.
- Where does the waste go? In South Australia, the EPA licenses waste depots. Ask for the name.
- Do you carry insurance? A truck scraping your driveway should not be your problem.
Sizes at a glance
| Bin size | Wheelie bins | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 2 m³ | about 8 | Garden tidy up |
| 4 m³ | about 17 | Kitchen or deck rip out |
| 6 m³ | about 25 | Whole house clear out |
| 9 m³ | about 38 | Roof or big renovation |
Weight is where bills jump
A cubic metre of soil weighs about 1.5 tonnes. Concrete is heavier, near 2.4. Fill a 4 cubic metre bin with soil and you have 6 tonnes, far more than a normal skip truck should lift. Heavy waste needs a small bin or a special heavy bin. Light waste fools people too. Rain soaks carpet and plasterboard, and wet means heavy. Cover the bin with a tarp. Actually, just ask for a heavy waste bin outright. Guessing costs more.
Banned items and permits
Asbestos never goes in a skip. Australia banned it in 2003, yet government campaigns say about one in three homes still has some. Built before 1990? Get it tested first. Gas bottles, paint and batteries are usually banned too. Councils want a permit when a skip sits on a road or footpath, and fees differ by council. I would ring the council before the bin arrives. A fine is a silly way to start a clean up.
Where the bin goes
A skip needs flat, clear ground. Trucks are tall, so look up for low branches and power lines before you book. Slide old boards under the bin if your driveway is soft or new. Load heavy things first. Keep everything below the rim, because drivers can refuse an overfilled bin. Leave room for the truck to drop it and drive off. Park your own car down the street.
Recycling can cut the bill
Australia recovered about 60% of its waste in 2020 to 21, and skip firms play a part. Many price clean concrete, soil and green waste bins below mixed waste, because those loads get reused instead of buried. Sort your pile before you order. Two piles beat one: clean stuff and the rest. Then ask what happens to mixed loads. A straight answer tells you plenty. Vague answers tell you more.
