An alarm you don’t look after isn’t an alarm, it’s a hazard. Most of the alarms that fail in actual fires weren’t poorly made, they simply had flat batteries, were full of dust, or had expired a decade earlier and no one had bothered to check. People tend to install an alarm once and then forget it exists, treating it like a fixture rather than a piece of safety equipment that degrades over time.
The good news is that keeping one in working order takes only a handful of small habits, each of which takes just a minute or two.
Step 1: Test The Button Every Week
Pressing the test button on your alarm isn’t just to check that it has battery left. You are in fact running current through the full electronic circuit – the sounder, the detection logic, and the power supply. If the alarm doesn’t make a loud, sustained tone, then something in that chain has failed.
It takes maybe five seconds a unit to test each alarm every week. Stick a recurring reminder in your phone and, when it goes off, work your way methodically through each alarm. For interlinked systems, this becomes even more important: pressing the button on one alarm should cause every other alarm in the system to sound. If you press the button in the hallway and nothing sounds in the bedroom, the link between those units has ceased to function. You’ll want to know about that before there’s a fire.
A lot of people assume that because the alarm went off last month when they burned the toast, it’s obviously working fine. It doesn’t work that way. Toast’s ‘nuisance response’ confirms that the sensor is picking up particles in the air – but it doesn’t confirm that the sounder is loud enough, that the battery will hold charge under sustained use, or that the interlink is all functioning. Only the test button gives you that.
Step 2: Know Your Battery Type – And Don’t Borrow From It
There are two categories here. Older alarms typically run on a 9V replaceable battery. Newer units use a sealed 10-year lithium battery built into the device, which is designed to last the lifetime of the alarm without replacement.
If you have a 9V unit, the chirp signal – that intermittent single beep – means the battery is running low. Replace it the same day. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in home fires where smoke alarms were present but failed to operate, nearly half (46%) of devices had missing or disconnected batteries. A significant portion of those failures trace back to batteries being temporarily removed for other uses and never replaced.
If you have a sealed lithium unit and it starts chirping, the battery isn’t serviceable – the unit itself needs replacing. Don’t assume a sealed alarm is immune to failure just because there’s no battery to swap out.

Step 3: Clean The Vents Every Six Months
Current smoke alarms use a photoelectric (optical) sensor – a small chamber where a beam of light aligns until smoke particles scatter it and set off the alarm. That chamber is ultra-sensitive. Dust, pet dander, and tiny insects which intrude inside the casing don’t need to be visible to cause problems. Even a thin layer of debris can either block the beam and prevent the alarm from triggering, or reflect it irregularly and cause false alarms.
Take a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment and run it gently around the vents on the outside of the casing every six months. Don’t remove the cover or try to clean inside the chamber – you want to prevent particles from migrating into the unit in the first place.
This matters more than most people realize. An alarm that goes off when you’re cooking pasta isn’t just annoying – it conditions occupants to ignore the sound or deactivate the unit. A reduction in dust ingress helps keep optical sensors properly calibrated, and reduces one of the primary causes of nuisance alarms.
Step 4: Check The Expiration Date On The Back Of The Unit
Turn your alarm on its back. Most of them have a “replace by” date stamped on the bottom. Most smoke alarms are pretty solid for about 10 years, but CO detectors need replacing after about five to seven years, because the electrochemical sensor cell that’s detecting CO will degrade over time regardless of the quality and regularity of your maintenance or how fresh the battery is.
This process is a physical one. The optical elements in smoke alarms just get less sensitive, and the chemical cells in CO detectors just get used up over time trying to sniff out trace levels of gases that are in normal air. An alarm that’s eight years old might look perfect but just not respond as accurately to those concentration levels it’s supposed to be reading.
This is the one that gets skipped the most because, again, there’s no waving red flag here, no chirp. No signal that everything isn’t okay. You actually have to check the date.
Treat your alarms like instruments, not decorations
You really don’t need to give smoke and CO alarms much of your time. A weekly push of a button, a semi-annual vacuum, a battery check when the alarm chirps to tell you the battery is low, and a quick look to check the date so you know when a unit is past its 10-year life. That’s it. The maintenance part takes just minutes of your time over the course of a year.
But that’s usually the difference between an alarm that activates and one that never sounds when there’s something wrong.
