We spend so much time planning for our cats’ everyday needs that we sometimes forget to make a plan for the unexpected.
Your Cat Needs More Than a Food Bowl
Cats can be surprisingly particular about their routines.
One cat may demand breakfast at exactly 7 a.m. Another may refuse to use a litter box if it isn’t clean enough. Some want constant attention, while others prefer to admire their humans from across the room.
A good emergency plan should include these little details.
Write down your cat’s feeding schedule, medications, veterinarian’s contact information, favorite foods, hiding spots, and any habits that a future caregiver should know about.
You can even take a few photos of your cat and their usual routine. It may sound excessive, but when someone suddenly has to care for your pet, those details can make the transition much easier.

Your cat’s health information should be easy to find.

- Current medications
- Allergies or medical conditions

Have the Difficult Conversations Early
Nobody likes thinking about what would happen to their cat if they were no longer around to make decisions for them. Leaving clear instructions can make things much easier for the person who takes over their care.

Think About How You’d Like to Remember Them
If you want your cat to remain part of your life even after you’re gone, there are different ways to plan for that.
For example, some people may want their pet’s cremains kept with them or placed in a meaningful location. Depending on local rules and personal preferences, some families may even consider having their pet’s cremains scattered or memorialized in the same place as their own.
